After having served as Executive Editor, then Editor/Publisher, of Model Railroading for over 16 years, I formed Highlands Station, LLC, in April 2007 as a "retirement" business to “provide technical and material support to model railroaders and the model railroad industry.” Be sure to see What's New for details about new releases, special sales and new services being offered. NEW ARTIST — January 3, 2013: The Gallery is pleased to welcome John J. Nauer as its newest featured artist. A native of Texas, John's first “family” train trip was on the Texas & New Orleans (a part of the SP) in the 1940s. This was the start of his love affair with trains. His art adventure started when he attended the University of Texas, which led to a BFA degree. Uncle Sam then took him under his wing, and he became a photo lab tech; first in Paris and then in Germany. When released, he headed for California and attended the Art Center College of Design for 2½ years. With this experience under his belt, he spent the next 40 years as a graphic designer and illustrator in Houston and New York City. After retirement, combining trains and art was a natural for him. He was inspired by artists such as Ted Rose and Bernie Fuchs (the top illustrator in the ’60s-’90s) and decided to make his own mark in the art of railroading. Each of his original watercolor train paintings has a title which describes a particular “moment in time.” It is his desire that each scene will draw the observer into the painting and that they both become part of the picture.

Model Retailer 2010 Hobby Industry Directory - February 5, 2010: Highlands Station is listed on page 25 of Model Retailer's 2010 Hobby Industry Directory. The directory is available in a free, downloadable PDF version at 2010 Hobby Industry Directory. Formerly the Business Pages, the annual Hobby Industry Directory has contact information for more than 1,500 hobby product manufacturers, distributors and service vendors. In an apparent sign of the times, this is nearly 25% fewer listings than were in the 2008 version, which boasted that it had "nearly 2,000" listings. This year's directory is less user friendly than in previous years. Invisible spaces have been inserted into the company names that prevent the detailed listings from being found by typing the company name in the search field. This was not the case in previous issues. I have contacted them regarding this problem and received the following response from Tim Kidwell, Associate Editor: "Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. We’re working on identifying and correcting the problem with the PDF." UPDATE: February 18, 2010: Model Retailer has fixed and updated the directory so that company names can now be found easily. The link now goes to the corrected file. ANOTHER UPDATE: March 3, 2010: Model Retailer changed their website and messed up the link to the corrected page. After contacting them this morning, they have fixed the link on their website. I have updated the link above again so that it goes to the correct file.

NEW ARTIST — January 13, 2009: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Michael Boss as its newest featured artist. Michael is a native of Kansas, and most probably was born with a paintbrush in his right hand. His formative years were filled with highly unimaginative grade school, highly imaginative writings, plastic model kits, some television and movies, but most of all, many of the illustrators of the '50s and '60s. After graduating from high school, Boss majored in music, his other passion, at Southern Illinois University. While there, he contacted his childhood hero, Jack Leynnwood, who would became his mentor. Following Leynnwood's practice, Mike continues to paint a full spectrum of aviation, space, rail, marine, landscapes, etc., never to be trenched into just one or two genres. The only thing fonder to his heart than the canvas and his music is Buckwheat, his beloved toy poodle, who can be found, if you look very carefully, hanging out somewhere in all of his paintings. Currently one original and three giclée prints are available.

Fred's work has been published on magazine covers, and hangs in railroad and railroad supplier corporate offices. An active model railroader, he regularly holds operating sessions on his layout and presently serves as president of the NMRA's Rocky Mountain Region. Readers of Mainline Modeler have seen many of his paintings featured on covers over the years. While attending Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD, he came to know the Western Maryland Railroad, a fortuitous event that shaped the direction of his painting, as scenes along the Western Maryland became a recurring theme and continue to be subjects in many of his paintings today. His works are included in hundreds of corporate and private collections, museums, as well as the Pentagon's Army Art Collection. Except for the time he spent in combat in Vietnam, he has painted all of his life.

NEW ARTIST — Mar. 14, 2008: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Gil Bennett as its newest featured artist. Gil, a life long artist and railfan, has been a professional illustrator since 1984. He graduated from the University of Utah's Art Department, and has continued to study and develop his style. Noted railroad artists like Howard Fogg and Ted Rose took an interest in Gil's artwork and let him know how he could improve both his watercolors and oils. In 1995, Howard called Gil the "heir apparent" and encouraged him to paint as much as possible...he has been doing his best to follow that advice ever since. Gil calls himself an "artistrator," a term he coined to describe his style, which blends the expression of an artist with the technical detail of an illustrator. As you look at his work, you will be able to see what he means. I am pleased to be able to offer his work through The Gallery. His book, Railway Reflections is also now available on the Books page. (Giclée prints will be available soon.)

The contents of all issues from 1979 through 2006 can now be easily accessed by clicking on the issue cover in each year's directory. Before today, only the contents of the July 2002 to August 2006 issues were directly accessible by clicking on the covers.
