Rock in the
Field - This enthralling piece by talented aviation and
railroad artist William Gardoski captures the waning days of Rock Island
passenger service in Iowa. Depicted is a short passenger consist powered
by a pair of aging and decrepit E8s traveling through some Iowa corn and
wheat fields near Grinnell. It's a hot, dry, mid-July afternoon during
the late 1970s, and the clouds are just beginning to look like they
might bring some much needed rain for the parched crops. Regrettably
they won't provide similar relief for the Rock's dwindling passenger
business, which will soon dry up completely and disappear forever. The
engines will soon be put out to pasture too, but on this day that spot
between a rock and a hard place has turned out to be an idyllic field.
Painting is framed in a modest frame, primarily to protect it during
shipping.
