Welcome to The Gallery at Highlands Station. In this online art gallery you will find some of the finest pieces of original railroad art from some of today's best railroad artists. Please note that The Gallery has been redesigned because of the growing number of artists it represents. Rather than having thumbnails of each painting on this page, each artist now has his own page that can be accessed by clicking on his name or sample painting below. This change became necessary because each new addition was increasing the amount of time it took this page to load. I hope this change will make your visit more enjoyable.

Gallery Happenings

NEW ARTIST — April 23, 2009: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Jim Kuttner as its newest featured artist. Unlike the other artists featured in The Gallery, Jim works with metal, creating metal silhouette art with a CNC plasma torch. Jim does all of the work on these pieces, from design to finished work of art.

NEW ARTIST — April 16, 2009: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Shayne Stoakes as its newest featured artist. Shayne is a railroader at heart. He was born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho, where his love for trains and nature began. He has worked for Union Pacific as a fireman/oiler since 1991. He enjoys model railroading as well as a variety of outdoor activities. Although he has had no formal education in the field of art, his many interests, family, occupation and scenic location provide wonderful inspiration and resources for his art.

NEW ARTIST — March 30, 2009: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Tom Rock as its newest featured artist. Tom is a native of Detroit, MI, and has lived in Cleveland, TN, with his family since 1978. In 1972, he produced his first painting under the guidance of NASA Technical Illustrators. He was taught realism in acrylics, a style he has mastered. He is a self-taught artist who devotes all his painting themes to railroad depots and railroad still life. Prints of seven of his paintings are currently available through The Gallery.

TWO NEW BENNETT ORIGINALS — March 12, 2009: The Gallery has just added two more originals from Gil Bennett. New works include Lackawanna and Nickel Plate paintings.

NEW BOSS GICLÉE — February 23, 2009: The Gallery has just added another limited-edition giclée print by Michael Boss. Limited to an edition of 25, it features a small steam train at Ruine Campi, Switzerland.

NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINAL — February 17, 2009: The Gallery has just added another original from Andrew Harmantas. His new work, Winter Storm in Oklahoma SOLD, features a Frisco freight headed up by a string of F units.

NEW ARTIST — January 13, 2009: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Michael Boss as its newest featured artist. Michael is a native of Kansas, and most probably was born with a paintbrush in his right hand. His formative years were filled with highly unimaginative grade school, highly imaginative writings, plastic model kits, some television and movies, but most of all, many of the illustrators of the '50s and '60s. After graduating from high school, Boss majored in music, his other passion, at Southern Illinois University. While there, he contacted his childhood hero, Jack Leynnwood, who would became his mentor. Following Leynnwood's practice, Mike continues to paint a full spectrum of aviation, space, rail, marine, landscapes, etc., never to be trenched into just one or two genres. The only thing fonder to his heart than the canvas and his music is Buckwheat, his beloved toy poodle, who can be found, if you look very carefully, hanging out somewhere in all of his paintings. Currently one original and three giclée prints are available.

TWO NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — October 26, 2008: The Gallery has just added two more originals from Andrew Harmantas. New works include Pennsy and C&O paintings.

PRICE REDUCTION ON ORAM GICLÉES — October 21, 2008: Due to the stronger US dollar, we have been able to reduce the US prices of David A. Oram's giclées by 7%. Canadian prices remain the same.

THREE NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — October 16, 2008: The Gallery has just added three more originals from Andrew Harmantas. New works include ACL, CSX and Santa Fe paintings.

THREE NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — September 29, 2008: The Gallery has just added three more originals from Andrew Harmantas. New works include Norfolk Southern, Northern Pacific and Santa Fe paintings.

THREE NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — September 19, 2008: The Gallery has just added three more originals from Andrew Harmantas. New works include B&O, Rock Island and Western Maryland paintings.

TWO NEW CARLSON GICLÉES — September 16, 2008: The Gallery has just added two more limited-edition giclée prints by Fred Carlson. The first is a N&W J, while the second is of an early Pennsy American.

THREE NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — September 12, 2008: The Gallery has just added three more Pennsylvania RR originals from noted railroad artist Andrew Harmantas.

SIX NEW HARMANTAS ORIGINALS — August 27, 2008: The Gallery has just added six more originals from noted railroad artist Andrew Harmantas. Paintings include three of the Pennsylvania Railroad, two of the Frisco and one of the Baltimore & Ohio. Andrew's works are extremely popular and are welcomed additions to The Gallery.

NEW BENNETT PRINTS — June 9, 2008: The Gallery has added several signed and numbered limited edition giclée prints by Gil Bennett as well as one open edition print.

NEW ARTIST — May 22, 2008: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Fred Carlson as its newest featured artist. Fred is a mechanical engineer working in the railroad industry and has been painting all of his adult life. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for three years, majoring in illustration, industrial design, commercial art and architecture. After switching majors two times, he had doubts about what course he wanted to take, so he decided to enlist in the service. After serving in the Air Force for four years during Vietnam, he decided to become a mechanical engineer, but he kept painting transportation subjects, concentrating on railroads. Fred's work has been published on magazine covers, and hangs in railroad and railroad supplier corporate offices. An active model railroader, he regularly holds operating sessions on his layout and presently serves as president of the NMRA's Rocky Mountain Region. Giclée prints of 30 of his paintings are currently available through The Gallery, and original works will be added as he completes them.

EIGHT NEW HOWE ORIGINALS — Apr. 24, 2008: The Gallery has just added eight more originals from noted railroad artist Tony Howe. Six works depict railroading in the South, while the other two depict logging railroads. These are truly wonderful works and are welcomed additions to The Gallery.

THREE NEW DESOBEAU ORIGINALS — Apr. 22, 2008: The Gallery has just added three more originals from talented railroad artist Marc Desobeau, the Artist of the Rails®. These three works depict scenes between Ogden, Utah, and Green River, Wyoming. As a UP engineer who worked this district for many years, Marc is quite familiar with the locales depicted in Mixed Freight, Green River Soda and An Apple in Echo. These are absolutely exquisite works and are exciting new additions to The Gallery.

NEW ARTIST — Mar. 25, 2008: The Gallery is honored to welcome Andrew Harmantas as its newest featured artist. Andrew's paintings have been published extensively in the railfan press, with over fifty being used as book and magazine covers, frontispieces and featured spreads. Readers of Mainline Modeler have seen many of his paintings featured on covers over the years. While attending Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD, he came to know the Western Maryland Railroad, a fortuitous event that shaped the direction of his painting, as scenes along the Western Maryland became a recurring theme and continue to be subjects in many of his paintings today. His works are included in hundreds of corporate and private collections, museums, as well as the Pentagon's Army Art Collection. Except for the time he spent in combat in Vietnam, he has painted all of his life.

NEW ARTIST — Mar. 14, 2008: The Gallery is pleased to welcome Gil Bennett as its newest featured artist. Gil, a life long artist and railfan, has been a professional illustrator since 1984. He graduated from the University of Utah's Art Department, and has continued to study and develop his style. Noted railroad artists like Howard Fogg and Ted Rose took an interest in Gil's artwork and let him know how he could improve both his watercolors and oils. In 1995, Howard called Gil the "heir apparent" and encouraged him to paint as much as possible...he has been doing his best to follow that advice ever since. Gil calls himself an "artistrator," a term he coined to describe his style, which blends the expression of an artist with the technical detail of an illustrator. As you look at his work, you will be able to see what he means. I am pleased to be able to offer his work through The Gallery. His book, Railway Reflections is also now available on the Books page. (Giclée prints will be available soon.)

NEW MURPHY ORIGINAL — Jan. 23, 2008: The Gallery has just added another original from noted railroad artist John Murphy. His work, simply entitled 5499, is a truly exciting new addition to The Gallery.

NEW ARTIST — Dec. 5, 2007: The Gallery is pleased to welcome John R. Murphy as its newest featured artist. John's exquisite Susquehanna Afternoon is an important work of rail art, and I am pleased to be able to offer it through The Gallery. We have also added two new limited edition Giclée prints from John.

NEW DESOBEAU ORIGINALS — Nov. 30, 2007: The Gallery has added ten new original paintings by Marc Desobeau. Click here to view these new original works of rail art from the Artist of the Rails®.
