AJ3 in Carroll County
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 36" Framed size 30" x 42"
The Western Maryland Railroad, and its connecting lines, provided fast freight service between major inland cities and ports on the East Coast with their
"Alpha Jet" service. These trains carried the designation AJ and the number and were given priority over other trains. There were as many as six different
Alpha Jets providing service on different schedules. In this painting, AJ3 is traveling east through Carroll County, Maryland, east of Union Bridge, heading
for Port Covington in Baltimore. As was customary on the Western Maryland, the well-manicured track was designed for speed, and that is what I wanted to
capture in this painting. If one could divine a painting that is emblematic of the Western Maryland, it would include a fast-moving brace of F7 road
locomotives hustling a high-priority freight train through the bucolic countryside.
