Approaching Storm
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Masonite
Original Painting     Image size 18" x 24"    Framed size 19" x 25"

Traveling through the American Southwest is memorable for the great scenery, but when thunderheads form in the distance, the landscape looks more formidable, from what is likely to come. As impressive as the sun-bathed scenery can be, approaching storms create another dimension of majestic proportions. And so it was when I was driving west on US 66 getting ready for yet another transfer out of Oakland Army Base for an assignment in Asia. The Santa Fe was just starting to repaint their locomotives with the yellow Warbonnet scheme and silver trucks, so the sight of three matched locomotives, all in the newer scheme, was an attention grabber for me, having seen the prior scheme for many years. This train was moving along, and I could hear the big GEs chugging loudly above the roar of the wind from the open windows in my old Pontiac. When the hogger notched out the throttle for a grade ahead, the engines barked. That's the image I remembered, and hopefully captured in this painting, which of course, includes the obligatory Western Maryland boxcar, which I actually saw many times in the Southwest, usually carrying ammunition from arsenals back east to Army bases and ports.

Price: $450 (includes US shipping)
