At the Sand Tower
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on canvas panel
Original Painting Image size 16" x 12"
Framed size 21" x 17"
A common sight wherever locomotives run is the servicing area. Like our cars, locomotives, be they steam or diesel,
need cooling water, sand and fuel. There was once such a facility on the Rock Island Railroad in Lawton, Oklahoma,
and I saw it toward the end of the road's existence, back when the Rock Island was still providing rail service on a
spider web of branchlines throughout the state. Being far removed from the larger terminals, the engine crew
performed sanding duty along with all of the other chores. This painting is a small look at the larger genre of
railroad still life paintings, but this scene in this place is long gone, as are most traces of the Rock Island.
