B&O Number One
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 36"
Framed size 24½" x 36½" (gold-toned aluminum gallery frame)
This is another "self portrait," not of me, but of the train that carried me off to join the US Army. This is the
National Limited, the Baltimore & Ohio's Train Number One, from Washington, DC, to St. Louis, where I would
change trains later that afternoon. After leaving the eastern mountain range, the the rest of line all the way to
St. Louis is relatively flat, and the train made good time between its many stops in towns that seemed nearly
identical to each other. Somewhere farther east, during the night, our newer E8 lead engine (see In the Potomac
Valley, a painting depicting this same train a day earlier) was replaced by an E6, and to me, that was
significant enough to recall for yet another painting of my first long distance rail journey.
