Big Juice, or Juicers, was an appellation applied to the Pennsy's locomotives that used
overhead wires to supply electricity to power their motors. Their magnificent dual-service GG1
class locomotives, painted here, are synonymous with the Pennsylvania Railroad, and I rode behind
them countless times on trains between New York and Washington, DC. They ventured south of the Potomac
River to the sprawling Potomac Yard in Alexandria, Virginia, to deliver freight trains for forwarding south,
and to pick up trains of fresh produce for delivery to the north. Prior to entering Potomac Yard, the
line passed through a lightly wooded area just past the Pentagon through what would later become
Crystal City. This is a freight train humming along, barely making a sound. These locomotives
would continue to run on the Pennsy for another couple of decades until they were all
gradually retired. The site in the painting is now nothing but high rises.
