Tidewater Virginia is all about sea ports, and that means export coal. In order to feed the overseas appetite for
coal, and to feed the large coal ships tied up at the docks, the Norfolk Southern and CSX lines operate large coal
transloading facilities, and to supply them, we have a constant parade of coal trains — loads east, empties
west. As an observer of trains in this area, the omnipresence of coal trains is emblematic of the basis for the
railroad, and so it seemed fitting that I should paint some of these trains, in their natural settings, without any
romanticized, or exaggerated, embellishments. Even the scattered remains of recent roadbed work in the foreground is
faithfully depicted.
