Watercolor is often called a daunting medium, yet children can use it with abandon. It is perhaps the oldest
painting medium, and has enjoyed a resurgence in the last fifty years, gaining acceptance by art collectors after
centuries of being considered a secondary form of painting. And so I had some trepidation returning to watercolor
after many years painting in oil and acrylic. Influenced by the master watercolor paintings I saw at the National
Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center gallery in Oklahoma City, I broke out the watercolors, buried deep
in my studio for years, and began a series of paintings of scenes along the nearby Fort Worth & Denver Railroad.
This is a study that I began loosely with light washes, then tightened things up with stronger color, more carefully
applied to denote shadow and detail.
