Cruising Through Duncannon

Duncannon, Pennsylvania, is a small town on the west bank of the Susquehanna River a few miles above Harrisburg. It
is dominated by the Middle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and one of my favorite places to observe passing
trains, as I often did back in the 1950s. This was one of the last places on the system where Pennsy was still
running steam, and did they ever put on a show of all their classic homegrown locomotives, such as this M1 class,
leading a train of refrigerator cars. By then, yard crews were no longer wiping down locomotives between runs, and
so they quickly took on a ghostly apparition of accumulated soot and road grime, obscuring the Pennsy's unique dark
green locomotive enamel. No matter. The homegrown locomotive is still in full command, displaying its utilitarian
design and unique Pennsy face, a sight I am glad to recall now.
