E's on a Big Fill
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 16"
x 20" Framed size 17" x 21" (narrow light maple wood gallery frame)
I've always enjoyed watching passenger trains speed along the Pennsylvania Railroad
mainline which was superbly engineered for speed with smooth gradients. Out on the
Lines West system, west of Pittsburgh, the land becomes relatively flat, punctuated by
gently rolling terrain as rivers meander through the countryside. By cutting and filling, the
railroad leveled out their line. To me, watching trains running across a high fill is a
dramatic sight, as is the case with this Pennsylvania Railroad streamlined passenger
train rounding a gentle curve as it heads on its journey. This painting was done
as a study for a series of paintings of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and focuses
on the Electro Motive Division locomotive doing what it was designed to do.
