E44's on Juice Train
by Andrew Harmantas

Along its electrified territory, the Pennsylvania Railroad had an immense roster of durable and powerful locomotives
running seemingly unceasingly around the clock. Anywhere along what is today the Northeast Corridor, one could find
train after train behind Pennsy's massive electrics, first the GG1s, followed by another winner, the E44. The E's
were massive, and unlike the streamlined G's, their design was dictated solely by function, so their utility was
apparent. They approached silently at all speeds, until they were close enough for the roar of their electric
cooling fans and the clank of wheels across rail joints could be heard. While the E's could be found on all
varieties of freight trains, I always enjoyed seeing them on high priority trains, such as blocks of refrigerator
cars carrying produce, or, as in this painting, cars of chilled fresh orange juice from Florida.
