End of the Run
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 30" (Unframed)
When I lived in Oklahoma, time for railroading was largely on the weekends, and out in that part of the country, the
weekends seemed to bring bad weather. When I packed painting supplies the night before I set out on my rounds, the weather
would be deceptively good, but the next morning, when I was many miles from home, the clouds would form and a deluge soon
followed. The rain would soak the ground, and trains operating through it were soon coated with a layer of grime that
dulled their livery and gave visual evidence of their toil. On one trip to Gainseville, Texas, which is a crew change point
on the Santa Fe's line through Oklahoma to the Gulf, I spent a soggy day watching the activity. Here, a member of
the head end crew has just come down off the locomotive and is headed home, concluding his run for that day. The
locomotive seems oblivious to the weather, and in minutes, it will resume its journey to Fort Worth and beyond.
