Evening Coal Train
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 30"
Framed size 28" x 34" (wood frame)
Virginia's landscape varies widely from the coastal east to the mountainous west, and the Norfolk Southern Railroad
traverses all of it. Running heavy coal trains along the tidewater flatlands, and using extra muscle to haul tonnage
over the mountains, as is painted here, its then-new SD40-2 diesel locomotives are seen running in the N&W's
traditional long hood first configuration. The last splashes of sunlight are ready to sink behind the hill side, leaving the
foreground in complete shadow. This spot is emblematic of the N&W, with the color position signals, the well-maintained
right of way, and the solid black locomotives reflecting sky light from their flanks. This painting is an exercise
in mixing and placing correct color values, since the color range is relatively small. I wanted to clearly
indicate all the details that were present, including communications lines, signal mast and the lacework of backlit
trees, that all compete with the sharp rays of the sun staring back at us.
