Fast Forties on the Middle Division

Those familiar with the Pennsy's Middle Division as it runs north and west along the west bank of the Susquehanna
River, will, if asked, talk about the green haze that permeates the air there for much of the year. There are many
explanations, but suffice it to say, it is often hazy, and in the summertime it can get downright oppressive there.
I can only imagine what it must have been like for the crews on steam locomotives, and the diesel era didn't provide
much relief, as the era of air conditioned locomotive cabs had not yet arrived. If the Pennsy had survived, one
wonders if the management would have opted for them. This was a busy stretch of the system, and trains passed
frequently through here. When I watched trains there, I took note of the haze and how it blended textures and
contrasts. My late friend, railroad artist Ted Rose, took one look at this painting and said, "Hey, you got that
green haze down good."
