Fast Forties on the South Side
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Masonite
Original Painting     Image size  24" x 30"     Framed size 25" x 31" (narrow wood gallery frame)

When I moved to Virginia, I quickly picked up on the vernacular describing various
locations. Newport News is "the Peninsula." Virginia Beach is "the Beach." The entire
area of south Hampton Roads is "South Side," and that is where the former Seaboard Coast
Line reached Portsmouth from North Carolina. Largely piney woods, punctuated by the vast
Great Dismal Swamp, the tracks are straight and level for mile after mile. It is here that I saw
the successor to the Seaboard, the Chessie System, run trains to port through these vast forests.
It was good to see these SD40 locomotives in relatively good condition over 20 years after
they came from the factory, doing what they were built for. The landscape in this
part of the country was new to me then, and made me want to paint it.

Price: $1,200 (includes US shipping)
