My hometown railroad when I was growing up outside Washington, DC, was
the Baltimore & Ohio. I could hear the trains from my house, and rode my bicycle
trackside after school to watch the parade of trains heading west out of DC, some still
headed by steam locomotives. It was always a special treat when I could manage a visit to
a depot and observe the head end as the crew made ready for departure. The focus in this
painting is a study of B&O E units after a going over by the crew, just moments before
departure. These studies help the artist coalesce the essence of the subject, and
serve as an essential step in proceeding deeper into the many varieties of the
images, atmosphere and viewpoints that follow in subsequent paintings.
