Denver & Rio Grande Western engine number 1701 is leading a westbound passenger train over the
Colorado River. No. 1701 was outshopped in 1929 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. This locomotive was one of an order of ten Northern type engines which the D&RGW
referred to as "Westerns." This image of 1701 depicts the engine after a company rebuild around 1937. The railroad was very proud of these high rollers. They sported
dark green boiler jackets, silver trim and polished siderods. These 4-8-4's were in every respect "Grande Northerns."
