Horseshoe Curve is one of the most remarkable achievements in the world of civil engineering. That it continues to function today essentially as constructed,
attests to the brilliance of the people that built the Pennsylvania Railroad. Visiting the scene never disappoints, especially in the winter, when leafless
trees do not obstruct sight lines in the expanse of the curve. The action there was nearly constant there was always something moving up or down the
curve, it seemed. The imposing mountains keep much of the curve in shadow for much of the day, and at sunrise and sunset, the light strikes just the tops of
the peaks, and in this painting, I wanted to capture the near silence of this helper set, drifting back down the curve. Since most of the scene is in shadow,
depicting the different values of grays and browns within a limited range was an interesting challenge from the more normal sunlit scene.
