The Northern Pacific Railway kept its semaphores until and beyond its morphing into the Burlington Northern system,
and to this day, those same signals govern train movements in the Northwest. I saw these signals in action, both
from trackside, and onboard Northern Pacific trains, so any painting I do of an NP train usually has semaphores
included. This is part of a series of NP paintings I've done, many featuring the NP's "A" classes of Northern-type
locomotives. While not as dramatic as Bozeman Pass, much of the NP route goes through relatively flat prairie
grasslands, and this is what this painting is about — semaphores, prairie grass and a refreshingly sparkling
clean Northern, not their normal state on the line, but seen often enough to confirm that it did happen.
