Horseshoe Helpers
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Polyflax over presswood panel
Original Painting     Image size  12" x 24" (Unframed)

After visiting Horseshoe Curve, one of my many memories was the frequent movement of
helper locomotives coasting back down the mountain to tie onto the back of the next train to
shove up the hill, an essential element of mountain railroading. Toward the end of the Pennsy
era, before Penn Central and Conrail, these then-new and clean SD40s were placed into helper
service, and the sound they made coming down the hill, with turbines screaming and dynamic
brakes whining belied the low output of the diesel engines. This is another study,
inspired by my early exposure to the Pennsylvania Railroad, and later reinforced
by showing my paintings regularly at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum.

Price: $600 (includes US shipping)
