Hot Shot is a generic term railroad operating departments apply to freight trains with perishable or time sensitive
cargo. These trains are usually superior to most other trains, and some operated at passenger train speeds. The
Santa Fe provided this kind of service to its shippers, and those trains literally burned the ballast when they went
by. Stops were few and brief. I saw a few of these trains, and wanted to capture a memorable sight of a fast train
departing Chicago in the late afternoon as it sped west. The style of this painting is a slight departure. The brush
strokes are bolder, the shadow colors somewhat muted, to better give the impression of the setting sun's glare on
the side of the train. I applied a highly textured coat of gesso (underpainting, or primer) to the panel, to add
texture and to emphasize the highlights.
