In the Poconos

This is the painting I did for the cover of Robert LaMassina's book, Lackawanna — Superpower Railroad of the
Northeast. It shows one of the modern Pocono 4-8-4 steam locomotives leaving a tunnel, while The Phoebe Snow
passes by. Book covers are designed to catch the eye, so I employed strong colors in the fall foliage, and a bright
oxide red for the Western Maryland boxcar. Composition for a vertical format painting has always created additional
challenges for me, since I prefer to depict the linear nature of trains.
