In The Potomac Valley

Some decades ago, I left my home in Maryland to join the Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I traveled aboard the Baltimore & Ohio's Train Number One, the National Limited, from Washington, DC, to St. Louis, where I changed trains and boarded Frisco Train Number One, the Meteor, which took me overnight through the Missouri Ozarks, then on to Tulsa and Oklahoma City before I eventually detrained at Fort Sill. This was the start of a long adventure, and I remember the first day's train ride, not just for what lay ahead for me, but for what I was seeing as the train traveled through the upper reaches of the Potomac River valley on a particularly brilliant evening where every detail in the landscape stood out sharply. The train overtook other trains, and I was surprised when one of the trains we passed was still being led by a steam locomotive. That image remained with me for all these years, and when I resumed my painting career after leaving active duty, this is the scene that resulted. This was my last taste of Maryland for quite a while, soon to be replaced by the heat and dust of the Southwest, and then some Asian garden spots.
