In the upper reaches of the James River in Virginia, the Norfolk & Western tracks pass through the Blue Ridge
Mountains, making for some picturesque locations that just beg to be painted. Here, the hardwood forests create
additional grandeur, and differing shades of greens make for interesting color choices for the artist trying to
paint them. Despite the scenery, this is serious mountain railroading, and the trains that pass through here draw
powerful locomotives, as painted here, operating per Norfolk & Western, now Norfolk Southern, practice of long hood
forward. The NS's "Thoroughbred" scheme is synonymous with coal in this part of the country. Most trains on this
line are coal trains.
