In the High Country

Winter in the Rocky Mountains has long drawn painters looking for impressive landscapes to capture. Having ridden on
the Northern Pacific, the majestic scenery I saw there continues to inspire me, and the railroad itself was one that
visually embodied what railroading was about: graceful steam locomotives, stately painted diesels, and a unique
monad corporate emblem. The benign sunlit scene belies the hard work that it takes to keep the line open, and the
unsung track gangs keeping the rails clear of drifting snow are the real force here. This is one of the Northern
Pacific's superb A class Northern locomotives, dual service machines that worked as good as they looked, and have
long been among my favorites. This is a general freight train, once again with the obligatory speed lettered Western
Maryland boxcar a few cars behind the locomotive.
