In the Hole
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 30" (unframed)
The Northern Pacific line through Bozeman Pass is a theme I return to frequently. It is full of impressive scenery,
rugged hills, twisting trackage, and every scene I can imagine carries with it the sound of locomotives operating at
full power to carry their trains up through the pass. This is what I wanted to convey in this painting. The train
"in the hole" holds a siding to let another train pass. The fireman on the stopped train is "looking
'em over," inspecting the other train, and no doubt, feeling the ground shake as the heavy diesels grind past. I
usually incorporate the NP's upper quadrant semaphore signals when I can, and I think they add balance to this
composition.
