Much of the Western Maryland's mainline was single track with some passing sidings. One might find a train that had taken the siding to clear the main track
for a train coming in the opposite direction. This was always a fortuitous encounter, as that usually meant there would be two trains one could catch at the
same spot. And so it was one day, when a set of SD40s, sporting the Western Maryland's then-new "circus" paint scheme were parked, awaiting another train to
pass. The crew is on the ground, preparing to perform a run-by inspection, taking in some fresh air in the well-manicured farming area of Carroll County,
Maryland, near New Windsor. For one who grew up with solid black locomotives, the new multi-colored scheme was a radical departure for the WM, and was soon to
give way to Chessie System's equally unusual yellow, blue and orange, but for now, this scene and this place is one of my final memories of the Western
Maryland.
