Indian River Crossing
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 18" x 27" (unframed)
Indian River Crossing is where the Norfolk & Western mainline out of Norfolk makes its first grade crossing after
the Elizabeth River Bridge. This is where trains begin to pick up speed. As they pass over Indian River Road, they
are accelerating, as was the case the day N&W 611 left town. I stood at the crossing and watched and listened. What
a show. I decided to paint the experience, but eliminated modern surroundings, making the scene look as if it were
back in the early 1950s, where this was a common occurrence. The billowing exhaust seemed to be illuminated from
within, probably because it was translucent enough to pass sunlight and refract it all over the place. That's what I
attempted to paint here.
