Last Rites
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil, alla prima, on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 24" x 30" (unframed)
The next town east of where I used to live in Lawton, Oklahoma, is the small town of Marlow, noted for cotton and
peanut warehouses, and the mainline of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific from Kansas City to the Gulf of Mexico. In
its declining years, the Rock Island fought for life, but it wasn't to be. Financial losses, regulatory complications
and other factors intervened to prevent a successful business reorganization, and the giant rail system eventually
simply shut down. Near the end, a freight heads into Marlow, past the boarded-up depot, belching exhaust, and still
creating quite a stir, but not for much longer, as the entire system was gone within a year of this painting's
completion. The term alla prima means all at once. This painting was completed in one long painting session.
Alla prima is a technique often used to create spontanaity and unity, but calls for careful planning and
execution so it doesn't get overworked.
