Leaving Chicago
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Polyflax on Braced Wood Panel
Original Painting Image size 20" x 36" Framed size 22" x 36"
Chicago remains one of the busiest of railroad towns, and back in the 1950s, it was even busier. With its many grand railroad depots hosting numerous trains,
there was a wide variety of railroads and passenger trains from all over the country. While perhaps not the grandest, Dearborn Station had trains of the Santa
Fe, and so became a favorite place to watch the parade of trains. This painting is an amalgam of my experiences as I watched from the Roosevelt Road overpass
above the tracks, where I was able to see and hear all the activity as locomotive sets would arrive, cut off from their trains, head to the fueling station,
then return to hook up to another train and depart. This sort of activity was nearly constant, and even more colorful than most with the Santa Fe's red
Warbonnet paint scheme in abundance.
