Main Street Station
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on canvas panel
Original Painting Image size 24" x 18"
Framed size 30" x 24"
This painting was used on the cover of the book, Railroad Stations of Virginia by Donald Taser. Naturally,
the cover would have to be Richmond's ornate Main Street Station, replete with decoration, elevated tracks, and
trains. The station is situated in the heart of downtown Richmond, surrounded on two sides by tracks elevated above
ground level. Today, there is an expressway that obscures a clear view from the west, and city buildings crowd up
against it on two sides, but from the north, there is a vantage point on the former Seaboard Air Line Railroad tracks
where both sets of tracks and most of the building are visible. This is the view we decided to depict, and after
visiting the location and making sketches (one of the sketches was reproduced on the endpapers), I came up with this
composition.
