The action is nearly non-stop when watching trains anywhere along the Pennsylvania
Railroad's ascent up the face of the Alleghenies. Horseshoe Curve, long a favorite spot
for train watchers, epitomizes the struggle between the railroad and the mountains. As with
most of my paintings, this one is of a scene I personally saw and experienced. Perched on a rock
above the tracks, I had a better vantage point to view the surrounding panorama, and I was struck
by the maroon color of the passenger train against the gray rocks and autumn leaves. It was
one of those windy and chilly fall days, but being able to watch The Standard Railroad of
the World on parade made me oblivious to the cold. That would be tended to later that
evening over an iconic Pennsylvania plate of franks and beans at a small place down
the hill in Altoona that fortified me for more places to go and trains to see.

This is one of a series of Pennsylvania Railroad scenes, a genre that was long
dormant in my studio while I was living in the Southwest, but which quickly reasserted
itself soon after I moved back to the East Coast and was invited to display my
paintings at art shows at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum in Strasburg.
