Night Trains at Richmond

Like an ancient Greek Temple, Richmond's Broad Street Station stands on a gentle rise just west of downtown and adds
its graceful dome to the skyline of this staid southern city. One night long ago, I came upon the station and had
the time to stand trackside to watch the parade of passenger trains moving through, such as this Atlantic Coast Line
train, making its stop, but with engines idling and the head end crew impatiently waiting for their scheduled
departure. The station itself, with glowing interior, forms an interesting focal point of light that bounces off the
ground and off the side of the train. Very soon, the lighting conditions will change when the engineer turns on the
headlight, and it will then become the brightest light in the scene. For now, the darkness envelopes everything,
and nearly obscures the bright purple and silver livery of the Atlantic Coast Line's diesel fleet, barely discernable
in this late night scene.
