Traveling west out of Chicago, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy, affectionately known as "The Q," ran many passenger trains, including trains to and from
the West Coast, forwarding them to and from Minneapolis, Denver, and other points, where these trains continued their journey on other railroads. So it was
always interesting to watch trains moving across the open spaces west of Chicago. There was a constant parade of Zephyrs, mail and express, as well as
the trains connecting with the Northern Pacific and Great Northern, with their very colorful and unique liveries. The Q ran very fast along these lines. I
rode the California Zephyr a few times on The Q, and a sustained speed of 100 mph was common. This scene shows the Q's three-track mainline out of
Chicago between Naperville and Aurora during the early '60s when there was still wide open spaces and the trains would be run flat out, appear on the
horizon, flash by, and be gone in a few seconds. Between trains, there was nothing but the sound of crickets and the wind out there in the flatlands.
