Oklahoma Winterscape
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 16" x 20"
Framed size 22" x 26"
In the dead of winter, the Oklahoma landscape, brown most of the year, loses even that color and takes on a frosty
straw color, except where the omnipresent red clay has been exposed, as it was when I went for a walk one afternoon
along a farm road behind my home, and, hearing the horn from westbound Frisco train 151, stopped and watched it
slowly approach. The starkness of the landscape, the bare cottonwood tree, the clear sky surrounding Frisco's
red-and-white livery formed an indelible picture in my mind of the Oklahoma prairie. I can still find red clay dust
amidst my outdoor painting gear, and it's been over twenty-three years since I lived there.
