Passing Through Horseshoe

It seems only a short time ago when steam locomotives could be seen in profusion along the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Pennsy did not completely retire all
their steam locomotives as quickly as many other railroads did, and the steam era on the Pennsy continued well into the later 1950s. On visits to Horseshoe
Curve, outside of Altoona, I was always impressed by the way trains would rise up out of the valley and follow the railroad up the mountain side, even though
it was a routine occurrence on the Pennsy. I was able to see some operational steam toward the end, among them this J class locomotive, a modern machine that
could do all it was asked.
