Pennsylvania Railroad Steel Open
Hopper Cars
A Guide for Enthusiasts
By John Teichmoeller
Price $22.95 ISBN 0-9655365-4-8
Highlands Station is pleased to announce the release of Pennsylvania Railroad Steel Open Hopper
Cars. Printed on 70# paper and 100# cover stock this soft cover, perfect-bound book is a must for PRR
enthusiasts and modelers.
In 1993 and 1994, Model Railroading magazine ran a series of articles by John Teichmoeller on modeling the
major classes of PRR hoppers. At the time it was the most comprehensive coverage of the subject ever published.
This new book not only updates his original series on the major classes, but also examines the secondary classes of
Pennsy steel open hoppers and includes numerous previously unpublished prototype photos from the collection of Bob
Charles, past president of the NMRA.
The book is divided into Pre-War, Post-War and Secondary Classes of Hoppers. Each chapter details a particular class
of hopper and includes key features, drawings, dimensional data, roster time lines, lettering information, prototype
photos and references. To aid modelers, the book features a wealth of model photos and suggestions for how to best
represent that particular class. Also included are 153 prototype photos (34 in color) of GL, Gla, GLb, GLc, H2, H21,
H21a-l, H22, H24, H25, H25a, H26, H27, H31, H31a-b, H36, H37, H37a-e, H39, H43 and H43a-b. The book also includes 64
model photos, with over a dozen appearing in full color. Careful caption reading is suggested, as it is often
difficult to distinguish some of the model photos from the prototype shots!
Other users of some of these hoppers included Berwind, Bethlehem Steel, B&O, Conrail, Donora Southern, Erie,
N&W, Penn Central, Western Maryland, Youngstown Steel and Virginian.
Author John Teichmoeller is a long-time member of the Pennsylvania RR Technical and Historical Society and has made
frequent contributions to that and other historical society publications. He also serves as coordinator of the
Railroad Marine Information Group.
