Power Transfer at Rockville

Perhaps the next-to-busiest nexus of railroad traffic on the Pennsylvania Railroad,
outside of Philadelphia, is at either end of Rockville Bridge near Harrisburg. On one
side is the northern throat of the vast Enola Yard, while over on the other side of the bridge
is Rockville Tower, where most of the westbound trains passed. No matter where I stood on the
grounds of the Rockville side of the bridge, there were unique signs of the railroad's identity, from Pennsy
designed safety rails, to the Pennsylvania Dutch inspired tower building, and a typical Pennsy signal
bridge structure. One attraction of the place was the nearly continuous parade of rail movements,
from their premier passenger trains, to hot freights, and even frequent light engine moves to
provide pulling power where it's needed for the next train out of Enola. This is a typical
engine transfer passing by Rockville Tower, approaching Rockville Bridge. While the
landscape is much the same today, the tower, and the Pennsy itself, are gone.
