When an artist starts to expand on a particular theme, the journey can be endless, as it was
when I began to do paintings of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. These ranged from large, panoramic
vistas of mountain railroading, to small works that were almost portraits, as is this profile of a former Pere
Marquette, then Chesapeake & Ohio E7 passenger locomotive, shown sitting at idle on a ready track
awaiting its next run. The painting attempts to show direct light from the sun, and reflected light
from the ground bouncing back into the shadows, bringing more vibrant color to areas
normally viewed as if they were all black, which they never really are.
