Reefer Block
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Canvas
Original Painting Image size 16" x 20" Framed size 17" x 21"
An entire train consisting of a single type of car or shipment was often referred to as a block in the era before the term unit train became standard parlance.
On the transcontinental lines, the reefer blocks of the Santa Fe were emblematic of the epitome of what railroads do. In this case, hustling refrigerator cars
full of fresh produce from California to markets back East was a common scene along the Santa Fe's lines in the Southwest, where the vast expanse enabled one
to see an oncoming train from miles away. It was always interesting to see the signals indicate that a train would soon be by, and then wait to see what it was
a passenger train, a normal freight, a work train, or, as in this painting, a reefer block that seemed to move as fast as the fastest passenger limited.
