Snaking Through Bozeman

The Northern Pacific Railway was, to me, fully justified in being called the "All American
Railroad" by the late David P. Morgan when he was the editor of Trains magazine. Long before the
landmark issue of Trains that was devoted to the NP, I had returned from overseas duty and promptly
boarded the North Coast Limited to begin my circuitous journey to my next duty station. What I saw was
a friendly, hospitable, and very capable railroad, which went out of its way to provide the best possible service
to freight customers and passengers, back when people were still taking passenger trains is sizeable numbers.
The NP has some spectacular scenery around Livingston, Montana, and the peaks above Bozeman Pass are
unmistakable for anywhere else. The landscape seems almost enchanted under a layer of snow, looking
like a romanticized Christmas Card come to life. I was stricken by the patches of light entering the
canyon through gaps in the tops of the hills, lighting up the snow, while the valley remained in
blue shadow. I wanted to try to capture that moment of light without getting too schmaltzy.
