Sunday Storm, Suffolk
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Polyflax on wood panel
Original Painting Image size 16" x 20" (Unframed)
Downtown Suffolk, Virginia, is like going back in time. The city was dominated by the large Planter's Peanut plant,
and the Norfolk & Western Railway's mainline west out of Norfolk passed through there, serving the plant and many
other industries. Occassionally, there is a lull in traffic and quiet reigns. One evening, I was returning home, and
stopped in Suffolk to see if I could catch a train going through. We had been having heavy rains all day, so the
ground was saturated, leaving ponds in low places all over the place. Power for the switching job there was tied up
for the night, their work done. While I saw no trains that evening, I did see the lights, utility poles, and the
locomotives reflected in the water, rippled by wind and rain. I went home, wrote down my recollections of what I saw,
and began this painting that very evening.
