The Super C on Cajon Pass
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Masonite
Original Painting      Image size 24" x 30"     Framed size 25" x 31"

This is one of many paintings I've done of Cajon Pass, one of the great spots for watching trains.
Made famous by several noted railroad photographers, the entire area gives interesting and compelling
pictures for photographers and artists. Before the recent major realignment of the tracks, only Santa Fe
and Union Pacific trains passed through here, over sharper curves and steeper grades, to get to the summit.
Back in the 1960s and '70s, Cajon Pass was on my itinerary whenever the Army sent me through California on
my way to or from Korea and Vietnam. The Super C was Santa Fe's hottest freight train, and usually drew
a red and silver Warbonnet FP45 in the lead. This train traveled on a fast schedule out of Chicago.
Watching it travel at passenger train speeds across New Mexico and Arizona was sure different
than watching it running at full power, snaking its way up to the summit. There were many
more days back then when the air was crystalline than there are now.

Price: $675 (includes US shipping)
