When I saw the Santa Fe's new High Level El Capitan leave Washington, DC, on an introductory nationwide
barnstorming tour, I knew that road's passenger trains would take their place in the line-up of paintings in my
studio, as they have done for so many other railroad artists. Unlike many other companies toward the end of rail
passenger service, the Santa Fe continued to modernize their fleet of premier trains, purchasing these FP45 monsters
to lead their all stainless steel fleet. This is a study I did as an exercise in using muted grays to depict a rare
gloomy day out in the desert Southwest, and how the bright colors of the Santa Fe's "warbonnet" paint scheme could
be muted, yet retain its Southwest character.
