Taking on Mail
by Andrew Harmantas
Oil on Masonite
Original Painting Image size 18" x 14" Framed size 22" x 18"
Looking down on passing trains is a favored vantage point in my paintings, affording me the opportunity to vary the
picture from the more ubiquitous and traditional track level view, and it opens up the landscape by raising the
horizon enough to reveal the land alongside the tracks. For much of the 20th century, the US Mail was carried aboard
passenger trains, and this is such a scene, with the mail being unloaded from a mail car onto a mail cart, farther
back in the train, in a small town in Virginia. This painting earned me admission to the Knickerbocker Artists in
New York City, being juried into the 29th Annual Exhibition in 1979, and is one of my more widely exhibited paintings.
Price: $650 (includes US shipping)
