This small work marked a departure for me. I had painted primarily large format works, and as a means to test my
ability to shift gears, I began a series of small works. From concept through execution, it is a different experience.
Everything is confined to a small area, so the composition has to be kept simple so as not make it look too crowded
or busy. One of my many paintings of the Northern Pacific is this one where the subject is a Railway Express Agency
baggage wagon on the platform, while the NP F units pulling cars through Livingston, Montana, take a secondary
pictorial role.
