The George Leaves Williamsburg
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Masonite
Original Painting     Image size 13" x 18"      Framed size 14" x 16" (metal gallery frame)

On the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, its premier train, The George Washington, was most often referred to as The George. This is the Newport News section that split off from the Washington section back to the west, to serve Richmond, Williamsburg and Newport News, Virginia. When in Williamsburg, I would stand east of the colonial-themed station building and watch the passing trains and was usually rewarded with The George or The Sportsman. This scene, dating back to the early 1950s, is almost unchanged today, with the exception of the chalet on the right, which is still there but no longer the Toymaker of Williamsburg; it is now a hotel.
