The New Wheel
by Andrew Harmantas

Oil on Masonite
Original Painting     Image size  18" x 24"
Framed size 24" x 30" (artist-made heavy wood frame with brass title plate)

At the west end of the Frisco facilities in Lawton, Oklahoma, there was an outdoor car shop that
was manned by two car men, Cleo and Gerald. They were always ready to share their experiences,
and the agent there would let me know when to expect a train. Frisco's entire Southwest Extension, from
Oklahoma City to Quanah, Texas, was "dark territory," or unsignalled. All train movements were controlled by
written train orders. With no signal aspects to let me know when a train was approaching, knowing about
when to be trackside gave me more time in the studio to paint. I've done over 20 paintings of Lawton
and am working on more. This painting dates back to 1980, and was inspired by watching Cleo
and Gerald switch out a flat wheel from a covered hopper car on a very bright day...
so bright that the normally red clay turned pink.

Price: $450 (includes US shipping)
